Infinity War just dropped in cinemas and as with all Marvel movies, there’s that oh-so-juicy end credits scene that keeps us fans salivating for more.
But before we spill the details on this big scene, a SPOILER warning is in order. So if you haven’t seen the movie, best you save this page and get back to it right after.
Still here? Awesome! On to this spoiler-filled article!
So the scene opens up with a black-screen with only voice-overs. The instant the characters start talking we realize that these are the voices of Maria Hill and Nick Fury. As the scene unfolds, we see both of them in an SUV somewhere in New York.
While this might seem par for the course for the two, we have to take into account that the last time we’ve heard from Nick Fury was on Avengers: Age of Ultron in that cameo appearance where he appeared just in the Nick of time (pun-intended), the same goes for Maria Hill.
Which begs the question, where have the two been since then? And why resurface now in New York a few moments before Thanos wiping out half of humankind?
The answer could be that the two are on their way to an old S.H.I.E.L.D. facility to regroup and mount a defense against Thanos and his army. It could also mean that once there, they light a beacon and call in all available heroes, Avenger or not, this side of the world and protect it against evil forces.
But all this guessing is for naught, as Thanos was able to gather the infinity stones and was able to wipe-out half of the population, including Maria Hill, at first. While it did seem that Fury would survive, its revealed later on that Fury would also bite the dust moments before he could send out a distress signal to a hero.
And that easter egg right there is the biggest part of the scene. Who did Nick Fury call out to with that beeper-like gadget? While what was only shown was a logo leaving many casual fans questioning what it meant, those who know of it would easily identify it as Captain Marvel’s logo.
But what does that actually mean? Why does Nick Fury call out to Captain Marvel in the first place?
As some may know, a Captain Marvel movie is slated for release just before Part 2 of Infinity War. It may stand to reason therefore that the events of Captain Marvel will shine light on the importance of Captain Marvel’s presence in these trying times.
But to make an educated guess on this, in comic book lore, Mar-Vell, the previous holder of the Captain Marvel mantle before Carol Danvers took over, was one of the heroes who was able to take away the cosmic cube from Thanos. Further, Mar-Vell was also one of the personalities that was known who could thwart Thanos.
Knowing that the Captain Marvel movie centers around Carol Danvers as the titular character, it stands to reason that Mar-Vell, who could be assumed dead, was the only one standing in the way of Thanos in collecting the infinity stones. Now that Mar-Vell is dead, Thanos became more bold in his plans of collecting the stones, and Captain Marvel might just be the only person standing in Thanos’ way.
So why page Captain Marvel? It is possible that Captain Marvel is off-Earth guarding the cosmos, or with Alpha Flight. So while she’s away, Thanos takes advantage and takes all the stones. Which triggers Nick Fury to alert Captain Marvel and call for back-up. She might just be the hero that turns this war around in favor of the Earth’s mightiest heroes.
